Subject: 190909 Igor (Thread): Helium!

Saw the letter, but didn't recognize author. Scott's sentence confused me but I'm easily confused: " we use about 800,000 liters of liquid helium each year. Most of it is recycled!" So you don't really use 800,000 L but just a fraction? I work at a National Lab with a supercooled accelerator. There is a surreal tank farm of over 100 train car sized tanks to capture He if they lose cooling. I'm not sure the what the actual consumption of He is once the system is charged.
As my freshman chemistry teacher said (4+ decades ago) the US is the Saudia Arabia of He, but when it's gone it's gone.

Just like to point folks at a letter in the NY Times written by one of our frequent contributors:

Also on a topic near and dear to my heart since we use about 800,000 liters of liquid helium each year. Most of it is recycled!
